An Evening Stroll
When taking a walk at night, please remember to wear reflective clothing or use a flashlight.
Walkers should face oncoming traffic while bicycle riders ride with the traffic.
For Bicycle Riders - Follow ALL traffic laws – bicycles are vehicles in North Carolina. Always ride in the same direction as traffic and as far to the right as practicable. Give an audible warning to pedestrians when approaching from behind. Indicate your turn by pointing left or right.
THANK YOU TO OUR BULLETIN EDITORS LINDA RUGG, MERRILEE BURNS and MARY KELEIGH

Storm water and Property drainage in Carolina Shores
Following is a quick review of the current regulations and approaches to handling storm water runoff from our homes. I have attached for reference a diagram of our town’s current storm water drainage systems. Please note the areas that are prone to flooding are designated by the blue crisscross pattern.
Historically, homes in our community directed their roof gutter runoff to the water ditch system. The new town regulations do not permit discharge of downspout water into storm sewers. The new method of storm water permitting to manage calculated storm water drainage requires all new homes to submit a storm water plan to evaluate the proper amount of undeveloped area versus the impervious surfaces. Any private ditch system directed to the town drainage system should be designed by a qualified engineer and coordinated with the Town of Carolina Shores.
A simpler but effective way to divert gutter discharge is to install a pop-up water diverter that can be found at any local building supply location. Connecting your gutter to drainage pipe underground to the pop-up diverter that will raise when the soil is saturated and send water over the surface to further disperse access runoff. These devices can be placed up to five (5) feet from any existing ditch.

Recreation and Social Activities – Sue O’Reilly
Jim and Joe and Pat and Livia
Come on down, it's time for Trivia.
See what facts you have retained
From all that schooling so ingrained.
But wait! There's more you'll want to know
From movies, TV and music shows.
Even silly stuff of modern times
You may find clues between the lines.
It's all in fun, you're sure to be
Entertained stupendously!
We'll see you there, we have no doubt
Below is what it's all about.
TRIVIA---POA clubhouse on Friday, March 22, 2024, between 5:00 -7:00 p.m.
POA will supply soda/water. BYOB if desired and a snack for the sharing table
The Lords Food Pantry
Help to fight food insecurities by supporting The Lords Food Pantry located in Shallotte serving Brunswick County.
We all love BOGO, but how about making that Buy One Give One?
A bin has been placed in the POA clubhouse, where food items will be collected weekly and delivered to support The Lords Food Pantry. All Items are welcome; please omit glass containers. The pantry is especially in need of boxed cereal, peanut butter and canned fruit.
The food pantry is also accepting empty egg cartons; a collection bin has been provided.
Thanks for helping meet the needs of members of our community that are struggling to consistently have food on their tables.
Volunteer Needed - Sue Hensler
We are looking for a volunteer who would be willing to take on the task of replacing the American flags that are damaged due to weathering along Country Club Drive and the 4 entrances to Carolina Shores. If interested and need more information, please call the POA office at 910-579-2044.
POA Library – Sue O’Reilly
For those new and a reminder to All:
Because of limited shelving space, please observe the following guidelines when donating books/puzzles to our library.
Only popular fiction or non-fiction with not more than 10 years from the present year. For example, this year, 2024 back to 2014 copyright (look in back of the Title page for this © and year.) Leave donations in the bin by the window—a library volunteer will place them on the shelves.
Magazines from the last two months can be left on the table. Puzzles must be put in a plastic bag--none with missing pieces please. Also, leave them in the bin.
NO "how to" books - ie., hobbies, crafts, cooking, gardening, financial, religious, games. children's or over-sized coffee-table books.
Our South Brunswick public library can supply up-to-date sources for all those specialized subjects.
If your books do not fit our criteria, you can donate them to South Brunswick Library for their book sale room. Please DO NOT leave them in our POA Library.
Our Library works on an "honor" system--take and return at will.
Thank you for your cooperation!

Book Discussion– Susie Riggs
The Book Discussion Group met on Friday, February 16. Our reading selection for the month was The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton. This tale of family love and resilience is a “hauntingly realistic story set in a future world in which weather patterns have become erratic and caused extreme hurricanes and rising water levels to wreak havoc on Florida’s land and elsewhere in the world as well.”
Our next meeting will be on Friday, March 15, at 10:00 a.m. in the main room of the POA clubhouse. We will be discussing two nonfiction books: The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David Grann and Ruthless Tide: The Heroes and Villains of the Johnstown Flood, America’s Astonishing Gilded Age Disaster by Al Roker.
Garden Club – Happy Mullen
Carolina Shores Garden Club members hosted a successful fundraiser, a Paint and Sip party, on Friday, February 16. Bonnie McGiver from the Waterway Art Association taught participants to paint a picture of a bicycle basket full of colorful flowers. The results were lovely. There was also a silent auction with wonderful baskets and gift certificates provided by club members and generous local merchants.
At the March 13 meeting, members and guests will hear about coexisting with alligators. Also, tickets for the annual scholarship luncheon will be available. The luncheon will be held at Brunswick Plantation on May 8 at noon with a cash bar opening at 11:30. If the weather allows, we will be seated on the patio. Tickets are $24 and will be available at the March and April meetings.
New members are always welcome at the garden club. The meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month, and annual dues are $10. Meetings always include a guest speaker, a plant raffle and a social hour. This year, the club is also raffling a quilt. Tickets are sold at every event and the winner will be chosen at the May luncheon. Please contact Mary Conover at 703-409-9612 with any questions.
